Collection: Dark Woods Coffee

Dark Woods Coffee is an adventurous coffee roaster, Barista school, and pop-up café nestled on the edge of Marsden village in the West Yorkshire Pennines. They roast their coffee by hand on a 1950’s Probat drum roaster in a beautifully refurbished Victorian textile mill beside the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and River Colne. The dramatic, windswept valley inspires the mood and flavours of their exceptional seasonal coffees.

Dark Woods use specialty grade coffees, which have cleaner more distinctive flavours than cheaper commercial coffees and are traceable to skilled farmers and their farms across the world. Carefully roasted to produce an array of flavours to suit a wide range of styles and tastes - which may be why Dark Woods gained another 13 awards in 2020's Great Taste Awards!

Though Dark Woods was born in 2013, the history of its founding partners takes in many years’ experience in roasting, sourcing, consultancy, training and machine development within the UK coffee industry. It is this collective knowledge and expertise that has allowed them to rapidly establish a growing customer base that includes some of the country’s top cafés and restaurants.

More than anything they want the finest coffee to be enjoyable and accessible to everyone by offering a range of roasts and styles that truly reflects what people want to drink.

ETHICS

Many of the coffees come to their attention because of Damian’s extensive travels over the years. Making friends and colleagues along the way, getting to know some of the best farms the coffee world has to offer. Not just for the quality of their beans but the professional ways in which they are managed, care for the environment and the people they work with.

Dark Woods work with all sorts of farms, some established farms passed down through the generations, to small farmers, to community run co-operatives (like our colleagues in Peru that are part of Café Feminino, where all the operations are managed by women).

Most of the time a lifetime of experience, skilled agronomy, and shrewd business brains are behind the top coffee producers; don’t be swayed by simple stereotypes.

But that said, coffee is still a “Cinderella” industry, with pitiful little research and development done to improve the varieties we grow, improve flavours and yields, and protect against devastating diseases like leaf rust. If the same situation existed in the wheat industry we all would have starved by now!

That is why Dark Woods are part of the World Coffee Research “check off” programme, contributing towards the vital work they do with every kilo of coffee they buy.

Their Multi-location Variety Trial seeks to catalogue for the very first time, the species best suited to a particular location. Suitably resilient to climatic conditions and disease, while still delivering great tasting coffee. Understanding the DNA traits that makes one coffee more successful than another.

They really believe them to be one of the most significant.

BCORP CERTIFIED

Dark Woods Coffee are proud to become one of the first coffee roasters to be BCorp Certified.

When Dark Woods was founded back in 2015 they knew that they wanted to be about more than great coffee. The opportunity to create a business that reflected the personal values of its directors means taking decisions that don’t always seem obvious.

Conventional wisdom dictates that people care more about cost than quality when it comes to coffee and this created an industry that is often grossly unfair, and in many cases leverages First World profits against Third World lives.

The Specialty coffee industry offers a different way of doing things; rightly paying more for better coffee, respecting the skills of farmers striving for quality and developing long term relationships that go beyond the transactional.

Dark Woods want to do this whilst being first and foremost a local producer; serving the cafes, bars and restaurants where they live. Good values are important close to home, being a supportive and integrated part of the local community, working ecologically, and looking after the Dark Woods team.

Values like these should just be how you do things, not a marketing gimmick splashed all over social media at every opportunity. They want people to buy Dark Woods coffee because it tastes great, not because its worthy. But people still want to know the company they support truly have the principles they expect.

To this end Dark Woods sought out B Corp, a platform that can assess and measure a business across a range of metrics that align strongly with the aspirations at Dark Woods – “Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.’

Certified BCorp business must score over 80 points over rigorously assessed categories and Dark Woods passed in June 2020 with a score of 99.6! Becoming one of the first coffee roasters to be certified.
